The Spoken Word began as a performance poetry ensemble in 1988 founded by arts activist Darrell Stover. The performing group presents at schools, museums, conferences, colleges, churches, community groups, fairs and festivals throughout metropolitan Washington, DC. The group has since grown to stimulate and motivate audiences on a broader stage. The Spoken Word offers workshops, classes and activities that address needs in the community through art and culture.

The Spoken Word Ensemble
Performance poetry, storytelling, and African percussion music combine for the unique experience that is The Spoken Word Ensemble. The Spoken Word is rooted and grounded in the culture; dramatic and dynamic in its presentation. The troupe has delighted audiences since 1988 with stage performances, school assemblies and writing workshops.
Adult Double Dutch
Do you love to jump double dutch? Come out and get your jump on! Don't know how, but want to learn to double dutch? Here's your chance! Although targeted to adult women, the program is multigenerational and open to anyone who wants to have fun. The health, fitness and weight loss benefits, plus the family bonding are added benefits. The DC Retro Jumpers is the exhibition team of adult jumpers that is available for highenergy demonstrations and lessons.
Lens & Pens Project
Forensics patients at Saint Elizabeths Hospital in Washington, DC receive workshops in creative writing, art and photography. This innovative arts program which has been in operation since 1989, received The Mayor’s Art Award for Service to the Handicapped in 1992 and the Mayor’s Award for Community Service in 2003.

The Spoken Word provides workshops, classes, and residencies on speaking, writing, literacy, and cultural diversity.
Previous Projects
The Family Forum Project
In 2008, The Family Forum Project addressed the issues and interests of singles and couples in order to help strengthen families. The Spoken Word partnered with SocialSoundoff.com to feature online debate on topics relating to love, marriage and courtship. Participants were also encouraged to join one of the web site’s online clubs, established especially for the Family Forum Project. In addition, workshops were conducted with expert lecturers, presenting subjects ranging from financial management, fatherhood, and healthy, stable marriages and relationships.
